In the following years railways lost their importance in passenger transportation. Instead of trains, busses were used for public transportation, including school busses. Thus the train station lost its economic relevance and was knocked down several years ago.
In former times Flechum was a pure farming community. However, due to the strong structural changes in the agricultural sector after the Second World War farmers lost their work. In order to add new jobs, Flechum tried to attract industrial companies. In 1964 a subsidiary of the firm Gautier from Emden commenced operations in Flechum. They produced boxes of large capacity and plastic tanks. This firm still operates today, but under a different legal form.
At the same time a residential area called Sandpool was developed. In 1967 it consisted of 31 houses, but since then it expanded continually. While Flechum changed from a farming community to a modern residential area, agriculture still plays an important role. The 1909 founded shooting club strongly shapes Flechums cultural community. The committed sports club SV Flechum consists of two sport fields, a drill ground and a modern building with changing rooms.
Flechum belongs to the catholic congregation Haseluenne. As Flechum has its own chapel they are relatively independent. Flechum hired the school's official residence and remodelled it to a community centre.

In 1991 Flechum became a member of a program modernising villages.
In 1900 Flechum had 270 inhabitants; today it has 522. Its current mayor is called Dirk Holterhaus.
All in all Flechum is a lively and growing village.
